What Mercury Retrograde Means for your Business
What Mercury Retrograde Actually Means for Your Business (And Why Your Rising Sign Changes Everything)
Mercury Retrograde is a natural review period that happens three times a year. It is not a warning, not bad luck, and not a reason to freeze your business. For entrepreneurs, it means pausing new launches and new outreach while using the window to review what is already running: systems, copy, client onboarding, and communication flows. Your rising sign determines which area of your business is under review this particular cycle, which is why two entrepreneurs in the same retrograde window can have completely different themes surfacing for them.
Every time a Mercury Retrograde pre-shadow opens, I watch the same thing happen.
Someone posts a screenshot of their crashing phone. Someone else blames a failed launch on the retrograde. A dozen people start asking whether they should “just wait until it’s over” to do… anything, really.
I have been on that side of it. LOL. I know what it feels like to hold your breath for six weeks.
Here is what I have learned after years of living these cycles alongside my clients: the anxiety about Mercury Retrograde is almost always more disruptive than Mercury Retrograde itself. And most of the advice out there is getting the story backwards.

The Only Analogy You Will Ever Need
Mercury Retrograde is the buzzer at the end of a quarter in a basketball game.
Not the end of the game. Nobody is asking you to go home. Just: get off the court, get some water, and take five minutes to huddle up on strategy before the next quarter starts.
The teams that use the buzzer well come out of the break sharper. They adjusted something. They talked about what worked and what did not. They walked back onto the court with a plan.
The teams that struggle are the ones who resent the pause. Who wish they could keep going without the interruption. Who come back to the court tired instead of reset.
Three times a year, the cosmos builds this timeout into your calendar. Most people spend it panicking. A few people use it. The ones who use it tend to come out of the retrograde with cleaner systems, stronger copy, and a clearer head than when they went in.
The “Re-” Framework: Your Instruction Manual
Here is the shortcut I give every client who asks what to do during Mercury Retrograde: look for the “re-” prefix.
Review your client onboarding. Is it still smooth? Does anything feel clunky when you trace it through?
Reconnect with people who fell off your radar. The warm reach-out you have been meaning to send? This season was made for it.
Rewrite the copy that has never quite sounded like you.
Revisit the offer that got stalled before it launched. Polish it. Get it ready for the other side of the shadow.
Relax into what is already working. (That one is deeply underrated, and I will say it every cycle.)
And honestly? Some of the best retrograde work I have seen has nothing to do with business at all. Sort through the 4,000 photos on your phone you have been meaning to organize since 2023. Purge the wardrobe you have been stepping over for a year. Clean out the desktop files that have been there so long you have forgotten what they even are. The “re-” prefix works everywhere — not just in your marketing funnel. LOL.
The prefix “re-” is your instruction manual. If the task in front of you starts with “re-“… it is probably exactly right for this moment. If it requires brand new communication going out to a brand new cold audience… that is a post-shadow project.
What Surfaces During Mercury Retrograde
Mercury rules communication. When it slows and reverses its apparent course in the sky, anything in your business that was running on slightly broken communication tends to become more visible.
The tech system with the glitch you never fixed. The email sequence that sends things slightly out of order. The onboarding step that has always been a little confusing for new clients.
These things were there before the retrograde. It just turns the light on.
The businesses that come out of Mercury Retrograde stronger are the ones that took the diagnosis seriously. They used the timeout to fix what they had been working around. The retrograde did not break anything. It just finally got their attention.
Launch Strategy During Retrograde (This Is More Nuanced Than You Think)
Here is what I actually advise — because this is more nuanced than the blanket “don’t launch anything” warning you will see floating around the internet.
I do not advise launching a brand new product to a cold audience during Mercury Retrograde.
That is a specific thing. Not a general ban on everything new.
If you are launching to people who already know you (i.e. a warm list, existing clients, an audience that is already in conversation with you) go for it! Just build in extra buffer time. Give yourself more space for tech hiccups. An email that goes to the wrong segment. A checkout page that suddenly misbehaves. Plan for a little friction and you will not be thrown by it.
If you are traveling for a presentation, give yourself more time between connecting flights, because something will probably be delayed.
The launch I would wait on is this one: brand new product, brand new message, brand new audience, no existing relationship, and the pressure of needing it to land perfectly. That is a lot of brand new communication riding on a season that is specifically asking for review, not debut.
What can you keep doing? Weekly emails. Evergreen content. Blog posts. Backend upgrades. Nurturing the people already in your world.
Nurture is natural in relationships. And relationships deepen during Mercury Retrograde.
As an aside: other planetary retrogrades mean very different things for a small business, and none of them carry the same direct line to launch strategy that Mercury does. Mercury governs communication. Marketing is communication. That is the specific reason I pay attention to this one the way I do. The other planets have their own themes, and those themes matter in different contexts. But they are a separate conversation.
Why Your Rising Sign Changes Everything
Here is the piece most Mercury Retrograde content leaves out entirely — and the piece that changes how useful this season can actually be for you.
Your Rising Sign is your first impression energy.
It is the energy you naturally broadcast before you say a word. Before anyone reads a line of your website. Before a potential client even consciously decides whether you are for them. Your Rising Sign is what they are already perceiving, often before either of you is aware of it. Other communication gurus call this “Brand Psychology.”
Your Sun Sign is the person you are growing into in your lifetime. Your Rising Sign tells you the first taste someone experiences in your brand and business (or any of your public expressions).
This is why I calculate brand archetypes from Rising Sign, not Sun Sign. The question for your business is not “Who am I becoming in my lifetime?” The question is: what do my ideal clients instinctively feel and trust about me the moment they land on my page? (assuming you built your website using Brand Pschology, that is. If you didn’t ask my about my Authentic Vibe Check, we can troubleshoot this, together!)
If you have never looked at what your Rising Sign is already saying about your business — and what your ideal clients unconsciously trust you to do before they read a word of your copy — that is exactly what the Brand Archetype Quiz reveals. Your archetype is pulled directly from your chart. Your ICA trust layer comes with it. And the quiz results give you a word bank to help you fold in language that feels like you, because it is built around the energy you are naturally broadcasting.
And that is why, when I interpret the Mercury Retrograde IMPACT for a business owner, I look at your Rising Sign… not Sun Sign.
For personally-focused astrology, Sun Sign works fine. But for your business, what matters is not how you experience yourself internally. It is which area of your brand’s outward-facing energy, your first impression, your public presence, is being called into review this cycle.
Two entrepreneurs in the exact same Mercury Retrograde can be reviewing completely different things: the cycle is moving through different parts of their charts.
If Mercury is moving through your 10th house (career, public identity, how the world sees you): your review themes are about showing up publicly. Does your current brand actually reflect who you are now?
If Mercury is moving through your 6th house (daily routines, systems, work): your review themes are about your processes. How sustainable is your schedule for your actual energy?
If Mercury is moving through your 2nd house (money, values, self-worth): your review themes are about your money flows. Are your prices aligned with what you actually value?
Same retrograde. Different house. Completely different story.
Once you know which house Mercury is moving through for your Rising Sign, the next few weeks stop feeling like a threat and start feeling like a very specific, very personal invitation.
The Personalized Mercury Rx Report
This is exactly why I write a cycle-specific Mercury Retrograde report for each retrograde.
Each report is its own creative work. Different sign, different energy, completely different themes by house and rising sign. The Mercury Rx in Cancer report looks nothing like the Leo cycle report from a few years ago. The Pisces report from last spring was all about dream interpretation and the images we carry below the surface. These are not seasonal versions of the same product. They are new things every time.
The current report tells you: which house Mercury is moving through for your rising sign this cycle, what that means for your business specifically, and what the “re-” framework looks like applied to your actual chart placement. Not just in theory.
One more thing worth knowing: your natural business cycle may not sync up with Mercury’s rhythm at all.
Some charts are built to move with Venus cycles. Others follow Jupiter’s expansion windows. A few are naturally timed to Mars. Which planet governs your most powerful launch windows, your natural rest periods, your built-in momentum seasons: that is written in your natal chart, and it is one of the layers we read together in a Business by Design Strategy Session. If you want to go deeper: the Business by Design Strategy Session uses your full Human Design and astrological chart to build a business strategy that accounts for how all of the cycles land specifically for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Mercury Retrograde mean for business?
Mercury Retrograde is a review period, three times a year, during which the planet of communication slows its apparent motion in the sky. For businesses, this means anything that was running on slightly broken communication tends to surface more visibly. The invitation is to review, refresh, and repair what is already running. Not launching new things.
Should I launch a new offer or product during Mercury Retrograde?
It depends on your audience. A brand new product to a cold audience? I would wait. Mercury rules communication, and introducing yourself and your new offer to someone who does not yet know you is a higher communication ask than this season tends to support. A new product to a warm audience who already knows and trusts you? Go for it. Just build in buffer time. Give yourself extra space between connecting flights and plan for something to go sideways, because it usually does. Mercury Retrograde will not ruin your launch. It just will not be the smoothest path of the year. Flexibility is your friend here. If it can wait? Wait.
What should I actually do during Mercury Retrograde?
Use my “re-” framework. Review your client onboarding. Reconnect with people you have been meaning to reach. Rewrite copy that never quite sounded like you. Revisit the offer that stalled. Fix the system you have been working around. Relax into what is already working. If it starts with “re-“… it belongs in this season. Rejuvenate with some rest? Yes, please!
Why does my rising sign matter for Mercury Retrograde?
Because your Rising Sign is your first impression energy — the energy you naturally broadcast to the world before you say a word. It is what your brand already communicates to potential clients before they read a single line of your copy, and often before either of you is fully aware of it. For personally-focused astrology, Sun Sign works fine. But for your business, what matters is which area of your outward-facing energy, your public presence, your brand’s first impression, is being asked to review itself this cycle. That layer is determined by Rising Sign. Two entrepreneurs in the same Mercury Retrograde can be reviewing completely different parts of their business because the cycle is activating different houses in their charts.

Why does Mercury Retrograde affect some people more than others?
Because the impact of all the planets in astrology is NOT universal. It depends on where Mercury is moving in your specific chart, how prominently Mercury features in your natal placements, and how smoothly your current communication systems are actually running. And for some, how aware they are of the spiritual and energetic currents. The entire world is affected by Mercury Retrograde, though, and it is one of the most searched terms on the internet three times per year, so it is probably not “nothing.” *wink* The people who feel it most sharply are often the ones whose processes or tech stack were already due for a review 🙂 Or needed the “cool down” period to reconnect to their soul’s purpose. The retrograde doesn’t create a problem. It makes it easier to spot!
How often does Mercury Retrograde happen?
Three times a year. Each cycle lasts approximately three weeks and includes a pre-shadow period (beginning about two weeks before the retrograde station) and a post-shadow period (ending about two weeks after the direct station). The full impact window is typically six to seven weeks per cycle. For the upcoming cycle’s specific dates and what they mean for your chart, sign up to be notified when my next Personalized Retrograde Playbook is available.
Is Mercury Retrograde the only retrograde that matters for a small business or solopreneur?
Mercury has the most direct application to marketing and launch strategy because Mercury governs communication…and marketing is communication. That is the specific reason I pay close attention to this one. Other planetary retrogrades mean very different things for a small businesses: what Venus retrograde means, what Mars retrograde means, what Jupiter or Saturn retrograde means…those are all real influences, but they show up in different areas and require different responses. None of them carry the same direct line to launch timing and marketing that Mercury does.
Could my natural business launch cycle be tied to Mercury’s rhythm?
Possibly… but it depends entirely on your chart. Some entrepreneurs are built to cycle naturally with Mercury. Others sync with Venus expansion windows, Mars momentum cycles, or Jupiter’s slower rhythm of growth. Which planetary cycles are most relevant to your timing, your launches, your natural rest periods: that is a layer written into your natal chart. It is one of the things we read together in a Business by Design Strategy Session.
